New Granite Delivers on Mack Trucks’ Uptime Promise

Latest suite of uptime services helps keep you on the road

Uptime is important to fleets and owner operators regardless of duty cycles, but for vocational fleets — especially construction and refuse fleets — it is critical. “If we cannot guarantee uptime to these customers, the losses are huge,” says Ashish Sadhu, director of Mack Trucks Services. “They are huge not only in terms of the delivery not happening but in terms of damage to the truck itself.”

Sadhu shares an example that underscores the criticality of uptime: a concrete pump mixer truck stalled on the road with a full load. Without rapid intervention, the problem escalates from delayed delivery to permanent damage, as the concrete hardens inside the drum — turning downtime into a major asset-level failure.

Mack always has considered guaranteeing uptime a core strength and has taken a variety of steps to deliver on it with the all-new Granite. The strength of the material used in the construction of the truck and the robustness of the components all contribute to the vehicle’s reliability. “I think it is fair to say that some of the design features of the new Granite are reducing wear and tear and keeping trucks on the road,” Sadhu says.

A Move to Predictive/Prescriptive Maintenance

Today's trucks generate vast amounts of operational data, and Mack intends to turn that data into a measurable uptime advantage. “Our trucks are engineered so that drivers shouldn’t experience failures in the first few years,” Sadhu notes. “But as the vehicle ages, we want to provide fleets and drivers with greater confidence. That’s why we’re building predictive maintenance models to anticipate issues before they occur.”

Given the severity of the applications in which Granite operates, Mack’s commitment is that the truck gets the job done — consistently, over the life of the vehicle. “Mack trucks are engineered for exceptional reliability, with negligible issues in the early years of service,” Sadhu says.

“Through continuous analysis of fleet-wide data, we can identify patterns that may emerge later in life — such as clutch wear, brake life, or turbo performance.”

I prefer to look at it as uptime being delivered as a system. Uptime is a way of life for Mack because it is a way of life for our customers.

These insights allow fleet managers to plan maintenance on their terms — when the truck or driver is already off duty — avoiding unplanned downtime and keeping Granite productive in the environments it was built to handle.

Uptime Services

Even with a more durable design and predictive information, there will be times when the truck experiences unexpected issues. “I think we have a very good suite of uptime services, which we call Mack Integrated Uptime,” Sadhu says. Mack Integrated Uptime is comprised of GuardDog Connect Diagnostics, Over The Air Programming and Updates, MyMack App, Mack Connect, and 24/7 Mack OneCall. In addition to this, Mack’s E-Call 911 Auto Call feature provides an added layer of protection. In the event of a severe accident, the system automatically connects to emergency services and shares location details, helping accelerate response when immediate assistance is critical.

GuardDog Connect is constantly and continually monitoring data coming from the truck. The data is analyzed and goes through a process where the faults are categorized based on the severity. It will tell the driver if they need to go to the shop immediately or if they can wait until the next scheduled maintenance service. This proactive approach gets the driver back on the road faster because of a 70% decrease in diagnostics time and a 30% reduction in repair time and with accurate repairs from qualified Mack technicians.

Mack also has the capability of sending software updates remotely to any truck at any point in time, so the truck does not need to be taken out of service for a software update. In addition, Sadhu says the new Granite can proactively request an upgrade. “This was not possible on the previous Granite and is a huge improvement. The truck is basically telling us it needs help,” he says. Trucks with the latest updates experience up to 24% fewer dealer visits, potentially saving customers up to $1,200 per year — all while improving performance and helping prevent issues before they happen.

Drivers also can download the MyMack appfor their Apple or Android phones. The app allows the driver to connect their truck in real-time, optimizing comfort and efficiency. Drivers can get instant status on fuel level, distance to empty, DEF, and engine oil levels, as well as low coolant and windshield washer fluid alerts. They also can check the status of certain exterior lights to expedite the pre-trip inspection. They can check the truck's condition and fluid levels, and use it to activate the heater or air.

The fourth pillar of Mack Integrated Uptime is Mack Connect, a centralized portal that gives fleet managers clear, real-time visibility into vehicle performance. Through intuitive dashboards, fleets can track fuel, safety, and overall vehicle health directly from truck telematics, enabling faster issue identification and proactive management. “Mack Connect serves as a fleet health report in real time,” Sadhu says. “It gives fleet managers visibility into potential issues across their vehicles so problems can be addressed quickly and confidently.”

The final piece of the uptime support is Mack OneCall, which is a 24/7 live support service that assists drivers during a breakdown by connecting them to the nearest Mack service center, locating available parts and coordinating road and towing services. The driver or fleet gets to speak with an actual person who logs a case and then follows up to make sure the issue has been resolved.

“Mack doesn’t stop at delivering repair instructions. We follow up to ensure the fix is right the first time and completed within the expected timeframe,” Sadhu says. “We measure success across the entire experience, from the fleet to every point in our distribution network.”

All of this is part of the full package that comes with the new Granite and is free of charge for five years. “Think of it as someone sitting behind a screen monitoring your truck for five years. What better example can there be of an uptime guarantee and standing behind your promise?”

Sadhu says that all the things Mack does to ensure uptime should not be considered features. “I prefer to look at it as uptime being delivered as a system. Uptime is a way of life for Mack because it is a way of life for our customers.”
