Power and Precision Inspire Powertrain Updates in Mack’s Anthem
Can you improve upon a legend? With Mack® Trucks’ popular Anthem®, you might think it’s best not to fix what isn’t broken. However, evolution proves critical in meeting not only the challenges of the market, but also driver demand. With its redesigned all-new Anthem, Mack has elevated the standard of regional haul.
The 2026 model introduces a suite of powertrain enhancements that enhance performance, fuel efficiency, and the overall driver experience. Serving as the foundation of these upgrades are the all-new MP®13 engine and the refined mDRIVE™ transmission system, which work in harmonious partnership to deliver unmatched capability.
The MP®13 engine: Revolution of power
The focal point of the Anthem's new powertrain, the inline-six diesel MP®13 engine is engineered to deliver up to 515 horsepower and 1,950 lb-ft of torque. This benchmark represents a significant leap from its predecessor, the MP8, offering not only more power but also smarter fuel usage. Thanks to a redesigned wave piston and combustion system, the MP®13 achieves a 3% improvement in fuel economy compared to the previous generation. Mack offers two variations of the MP®13, which are available as the MP®13 Standard and the MP®13 HE (High Efficiency) options.
The MP®13 Standard is versatile in its design and fit for multiple applications. The functionality of adapting to changes in terrain and load conditions is made possible by a variable geometry turbocharger.
The MP®13 HE specifically serves as a solution if you’re seeking to increase efficiency while reducing annual fuel cost. This system uses turbo compounding technology to recycle exhaust heat into usable power, which results in additional power without an increase in fuel consumption.
The MP®13 and MP®13 HE are available in multiple power profiles, spanning 415 to 515 HP and 1,550 to 1,950 lb-ft of torque. Because of the available configurations, you now are able to select a package that best meets their specific needs.
mDRIVE™ transmission: Smarter shifting for a comfortable ride
The upgraded mDRIVE™ automated manual transmission, now available in 12-, 13-, and 14-speed configurations, complements the MP®13 engine. The 13-speed Dynamic Overdrive features an innovative shifting system that toggles between Economy+, Economy, and Performance modes based on driving conditions encountered on the highway. This dynamic engineering ensures you’ll maintain peak efficiency without sacrificing startability or hill-climbing power.
Anthem’s improved performance relies heavily on critical transmission upgrades. Due to the optimized gear design and electronics, you’ll benefit from a 30 percent increase in shift speed when behind the wheel. Extended transmission life is thanks to a redesigned clutch housing and dampening control system that reduces overall wear.
Mack also outfits the Anthem with the mDRIVE™ HD solution, allowing you to transport heavy loads across challenging terrain. Its ultra-low creep gear and multi-speed reverse options help achieve these accomplishments.
According to Kevin West, Senior Product Manager of Vehicle Propulsion at Mack, the mDRIVE™ transmission features a built-in GPS with an inclinometer, enabling it to learn routes driven. In the past, you needed to determine how to manage different roadside challenges, such as increases in grades. The mDRIVE™ does the prep work for you.
"The unit will go ahead and make the preparations in advance when it starts to encounter something like that grade increase," says West. "It learns and understands routes so it can decide how to approach varying terrain, such as downshifting early or holding a gear a little longer instead of downshifting at the crest of a hill.”
High performance delivered
Mack developed a powerful and practical powertrain with the MP®13 engine and mDRIVE™ transmission combination. The Anthem's fuel efficiency improvements can yield you up to $5,000 in annual fuel savings per truck, a substantial figure if you’re looking to reduce costs while maintaining optimal performance.
With the power and performance improvements found in the Anthem, stopping the vehicle remains just as crucial. As a result, Anthem's engine-braking component was revamped as well.
"We’ve improved our engine brake," says West. "We now reach engine breaking performance over 400hp above 1650rpm, which is achieved through implementing an exhaust brake mounted to the outlet flange of the turbo compound unit."
Summing up
The 2026 Mack Anthem is more than a facelift; it's a full-scale evolution. With its innovative MP®13 engine and intelligent mDRIVE™ transmission, Mack further improved the Anthem as a vehicle that meets the modern demands of efficiency, power, and driver comfort. Whether you’re navigating city streets or tackling general freight operations, the new Anthem delivers a driving experience second to none, with significant strengths found in powertrain and aerodynamic updates.
